Flower photography

1. Avoid taking flower photos from top of the flower as we see everyday, try to shoot them from side. Unless you are not taking any macro shots. Here is the example http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3398/3581892484_f6be84fd13_m.jpg

2. For macro photography Start by shooting in AV mode, then use the smallest aperture number your lens will allow (if you have an f/5.6 lens, use f/5.6). Then try to isolate one flower, or a small group of flowers that are close together, and focus on just that flower. When you do this, it puts the background out of focus, which keeps the background from distracting the eye and makes a stronger visual composition.

Advanced sharpening by pros

Open photoshop CS2 and image that you want to edit
Go under the Image menu, under Mode, and choose Lab Color.
Go to the Channels palette and click on the Lightness channel. (Note: This Lightness channel contains only the detail and not the color in the photo, which is why you sidestep some of the color problems you get by sharpening the full-color photo.)
Now apply the Unsharp Mask filter settings as mentioned in Apply sharpness
Try applying the Unsharp Mask filter again, using the same settings. If your photo appears too sharp, before you do anything else, go under the Edit menu and choose Fade Unsharp Mask. In the Fade dialog, lower the Opacity slider to 50%, so you only get half-strength on the second application of the filter.
Now go back under the Image menu, under Mode, and choose RGB Color.

Photoshop sharpening tips

If you like to sharp your image using Photoshop, follow the instruction

1. Open image in photoshop

2. Filter -> Sharpen -> Unsharp mask

3. Follow below settings according to your shot…

For people: Amount 150%, Radius 1, Threshold 10
For cityscapes, urban photography, or travel: Amount 65%, Radius 3, Threshold 2
For general everyday use: Amount 85%, Radius 1, Threshold 4

Avoid increasing ISO

Even in dim light try to avoid increasing ISO, More ISO will make your shot noisy. Use shutter speed as much as possible

Exposure Compensation – dedicated button – “up” on the 4-way controller
Exposure Lock – press the ISO button with the shutter release half-pressed
Exposure Lock – press the ISO button with the shutter release half-pressed
Focus Lock – press MF with the shutter release half-pressed or just aim at your focus target, half press and then recompose while holding; using the MF button makes it stick and gives you the advantage of being able to re-meter.
Focus Frame – press the SET button then move the frame around with the 4-way controller.
Flash Compensation – 2-levels down in the “FUNC” menu but see the note about the shortcut button below.
White Balance – press the FUNC menu button where it’s the top item – if you’ve used the FUNC menu since you last powered-up, it might not be the first item anymore
ISO – press the dedicated button and change it with the 4-way controller.
Drive Mode and timer – press the dedicated button – press it repeatedly to cycle through choices
Display Control – press the dedicated button – press it repeatedly to cycle through choices
Macro Mode – dedicated button on front left side; hold momentarily to get Super Macro Mode, which allows you to focus on lens dust
Review – swivel the power switch the opposite way from the shooting mode; it’s possible to get quite good at this
Focus Mode – 2-levels down in the “FUNC” menu, but see the note about the shortcut button below.

Tips for ISO

Why ISO?

ISO determines how sensitive the image sensor is to light on your image. Depends on the camera ISO ranges varies, Doubling the ISO number of the film doubles its sensitivity to light. So ISO 200 film needs half the light to take the same picture as ISO 100 film. ISO 400 film needs a quarter of the light that ISO 100 needs. In other words, if your camera would try to capture a particular low-light scene with a shutter speed of 1/15 second at ISO 100, you could capture it at 1/60 second at ISO 400.

Usage of ISO

ISO 100 -200:
1. When taking photograph outside in sunny condition

ISO 800:
1. If sky is overcast or evening time, use ISO 400-800
2. If you were not feasable to use tripord in mountain range or museum or theatre..
3. Birthday party
4. When to avoid flash

ISO 1600:
1. Night time or in low light, if you don’t set then your photo will appear too dark
